The Emancipation Proclamation was signed on Sept 22, 1862 to free all slaves effective Jan 1, 1863. Texas, which didn’t play a central part of the confederacy nor was it a significant part of the battle front, was slower to the party. On June 18, 1865 (nearly two years later) General Granger rode into Galveston which had one one of the most significant slave populations in the state. The next day he read General Order #3 which broke the news to the last remaining slaves and a large celebration followed in the streets. The next year freedmen, organized a celebration to commemorate and Juneteenth was born.
Significant
Today felt like a great day to launch b/c of the symbolism on a few levels. The first major thing to take from Juneteenth is that the people that are positions of power dependent on your oppression of ignorance have no incentive to give you timely information that will benefit you and loosen their control over you. This platform is designed to give information.
The next major thing to be received is that freedom and solidarity are powerful and to be celebrated.
Happy Freedom Day!
Shout out to Jason for his hard work in making this all possible. Shout out to Mar for staying down.
